Bobby L. Birckhead Sr., 80, of Earlysville, Virginia, passed away on October 3, 2026.
He was born on October 12, 1945, to the late Aulton James Birckhead and Margaret Shifflett Birckhead. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 41 years, Frances Lawson Birckhead; his brothers, Robert Birckhead and Aubrey Birckhead; and his sister, Thelma Birckhead Thurman.
Bobby worked as a carpenter and owned Birckhead Construction for many years before retiring in 2012. He was an avid hunter and a longtime member of the South River Hunt Club. In his later years, Bobby found great enjoyment in feeding the deer, birds, and any other animals that came around.
He is survived by his daughter, Teresa Birckhead Bryant (Brett), and his son, Bobby Lee Birckhead Jr., both of Earlysville; his two very special granddaughters, Ashley Nicole Grooms, lovingly known to him as “Coco,” and Harlyn Leigh Birckhead; and his great-grandson, Trevyn Zepher Scruggs.
Bobby will be remembered for his hard work, his love of the outdoors, his deep love for dogs—particularly Dudley, Titan, and Roxie—and the quiet joy he found in nature. He was a simple man, and you could almost always find him in a pair of jeans and a white T-shirt.
Bobby was a member of Pine Ridge Church of the Brethren. A graveside service will be held on Wednesday, October 7th at 12pm, at Holly Memorial Gardens. Deacon Steve Shifflett, a longtime friend and fellow member of Pine Ridge Church of the Brethren, will officiate.
The family would like to especially thank Melanie Shifflett for Dad’s care over the last two years; his Hospice nurse, Nina, for the loving care she provided over the last five months; and the Hospice House care team for the compassionate care they provided to Dad and the family during his final days. Missi, Ashley, Delores, Doris, Sandra, Erma, Pam, Kathy, and Stacey—we are forever grateful and blessed by each of you.
In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to Hospice of the Piedmont.
The family also deeply appreciates the love, support, prayers, and kindness shown during this difficult time. Your thoughtfulness and prayers have meant more than words can express.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Batten Funeral Home of Ruckersville, Virginia.
