Charles Edward Lilly, age 90, of Charlottesville, and currently living in Roanoke, Virginia, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, March 25, 2014.

 He was born November 18, 1923, in Ellicott City, Maryland, son of the late Charles E. Lilly, Sr. and Anna Knight Lilly.  He was preceded in death by an infant son, Charles E. Lilly, III; by his wife, Charlotte L. Lilly; by three brothers, Robert E. Lilly, James F. Lilly and Richard Lilly; and by one sister, Bertha L. Phillips.

 He is survived by a daughter, Carol J. Lilly of Birmingham, Alabama; a son, Calvin L. Lilly and wife Wanda of Roanoke, Virginia; four grandchildren, Jason Hooper, Meagan Hooper, Sarah Lilly and Susan Lilly; and three great-grandchildren, Joshua, Caleb and Samuel Hooper.

 Affectionately known as “Dink”, he grew up as one of the Charlottesville Belmont Boys. He graduated from Lane High School, Class of 1943.  He served in the Army Air Force from 1943 to 1946, as a communications specialist.  Dink worked at the Charlottesville Post Office until he retired in 1974.  Upon retirement he enjoyed sports and traveled the globe.  He moved to Roanoke in 2004, where he enjoyed life at Friendship Retirement Community.  Charles “Dink” Lilly treasured his life-long friendships formed from his days in youth sports, military service, and Postal employment. 

 The family would like to express heartfelt appreciation to Judith Byrd, a true friend, for her companionship and compassionate care. 

 Graveside services will be held at 10:00 a. m., Saturday, March 29, 2014 at Holly Memorial Gardens, 3251 Seminole Trail, Charlottesville, Virginia, 22911. 

 The outstanding care of Good Samaritan Hospice was appreciated and will never be forgotten.   The family suggests that memorials be made either to a charity of your choice, or to Good Samaritan Hospice, 2408 Electric Road, Roanoke, Virginia 24018.
