David L. Showalter, Sr., 70, of Madison County, VA, went to sleep in death on Friday, October 31, 2025.
David “Davy Crockett” was born in Charlottesville, VA, on December 19, 1954, to the late James Milton Showalter and Audrey Showalter Reid. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers Glenn Showalter and Larry Showalter.
David enlisted in the United States Army at a young age, where he discovered his passion for driving. When his term of service ended, he took to the open road, earning the nickname “Speedbuggy”, driving cross-country in 18-wheelers and collecting countless miles and stories along the way. After taking a break from long-haul driving, David turned his mechanical skills into a new career, becoming one of the best diesel mechanics around. He worked for many years at Jim Price Chevrolet, where his ingenuity and drive to find better solutions led him to earn a patent for one of his own tool designs. Still, it was his love of the road that called him back. David returned to driving, proudly owning and operating D&D Hauling alongside his son, David Lee, for several more years before finally retiring. He leaves behind a legacy of hard work, craftsmanship, and a lifetime of miles well-traveled.
He will continue to live on in the hearts of his children: David Lee Showalter, Jr., Matthew Showalter and his wife, Haley; James Showalter and his wife, Ashleigh; and Lisa Marie Sweeney and her husband, Anthony. His grandchildren, Brayden, Elijah, Aiyanna, and Landon. Additionally, he is survived by his sister and best friend, Doris Brewer, and her husband, Larry, and a brother, Bobby Showalter, and his wife, Sandy. His nieces and nephews, Hershey, James, Amanda, Devan, and Brian. Along with countless cousins and friends. He also held a special bond with Kevin and Lora Seale, whom he loved like family. His memory will live on through the stories shared, the lessons he taught, and the love he gave so freely. Those who knew him will always remember his laughter, his determination, and the way he made everyone feel like a lifelong friend.
David had a way of brightening any room simply with his presence. Always smiling, he loved bringing joy to others through his sense of humor and endless stories. Nothing made him happier than spending time with his “boys.” Whether trucking, watching NASCAR, hunting, or fishing, his happiest moments were those spent by their side.
David was a member of the Christian congregation of Jehovah’s Witnesses and faithfully served for many years as part of the Ruckersville Congregation. He found joy in life’s simple moments — especially a cup of black coffee, Bible reading, and personal study each morning. A private memorial service will be held at a later date. Please join the family with the quiet remembrance of a life well lived.
Arrangements are entrusted to Batten Funeral Home of Ruckersville, Virginia.
