The family of Enos Basil Powell is sad to share the news that he passed away on August 26, 2025.
He was born to Enos and Lillian H. Powell in Charlottesville, Virginia, on November 26, 1938. He was predeceased by his parents, brothers Glenn Powell and Gale Powell, and his son William “Billy” Edward Powell.
He lived with his parents and brothers on Montrose Avenue during his young life. While both brothers were away in the war and at college, he stopped school in the 9th grade when his father was injured in order to help provide for his parents. He learned at a very young age how to work hard, save for what you wanted, pay your bills, and provide for your family.
He was a veteran salesman at heart, selling newspapers for the Daily Progress and Washington Post, bread for Sunbeam Bakery, Life Insurance for Peoples Life, and cars for Roy Haney Motor Company, Brady-Bushey Ford, and Jim Price Chevrolet. At other times in his life, he sold Beer for J.W. Sieg and, in his retirement, Little Debbie Cakes. More than once in his life he worked several jobs at once, often leaving early in the morning and returning late at night 6 days a week. He was exceptionally good at sales, winning the National Quality Award for Insurance, and Salesman of the Month numerous times at Brady-Bushey and Jim Price.
He was also a jokester and loved practical jokes, and gadgets that made noise when you either sat on them or a button was pushed to bring an unexpected “surprise” to many. He was a dog and pet lover, adored his old Western movies, and loved French fries, beer, cheeseburgers, and taco salads!
Enos is survived by his wife of 46 years, Emily M. Powell. She stayed, literally, by his side throughout the entirety of his declining health. He is survived by 6 of his 7 children, in order of age, Cindy Powell Zug and husband Jon, Keith Via and wife Becky, David Powell and wife Lynne, Kevin Via and wife Tracey, Mark Via and wife Ingrid, and Bruce Powell and wife Dee-Dee. He is also survived by many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, a niece and nephew, and his beloved cat, Bella.
The family would like to extend a special thanks to Hospice of the Piedmont, and especially the West team. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to Hospice of the Piedmont at 675 Peter Jefferson Parkway, Suite 300, Charlottesville, VA 22911.
There will be a funeral at Batten Funeral Home, 12819 Spottswood Trail, Ruckersville, VA 22968, and interment at Holly Memorial Gardens in Charlottesville. The family will receive friends on Friday, August 29, from 10:00 to 11:00, an hour before the service, and the interment will immediately follow thereafter.
