Eugene Godfrey Mower, III

January 7, 1946 — June 3, 2025

Eugene “Geno” Mower, a cherished husband, loving father, devoted stepfather, beloved GPop, and treasured brother, passed away at home in Ruckersville, VA on June 3, 2025, after many years of living with vascular dementia. He was 79 beautiful years old.

Born on January 7, 1946, in Takoma Park, Maryland, to Eugene and Martha Mower, Geno embodied the values of service, kindness, and integrity throughout his life. He was a devoted husband to his beloved wife, Eleanor, who lovingly cared for him at home for the past ten years, providing comfort and dignity during his illness.

After graduating from Northwood High School in Silver Spring, Maryland, Geno followed in the footsteps of his father and grandfather by pursuing a career in law enforcement. He proudly served for over 29 years with the United States Senate Sergeant at Arms Office on Capitol Hill. His roles included serving as a Capitol Police Officer for 12 years, a Liaison Parking Enforcement Officer, and later, a deputy with the U.S. Marshals Service. One of his final assignments was protecting former U.S. Attorney General Janet Reno. Known as “the guy in the boots” (because he hated wearing shoes), Geno was recognized by many Senators and staff for his quiet dedication and signature style.

Geno had a deep love for his family, the open water, classic cars (especially Mustangs), Elvis Presley, country music, cookies, and every kind of dog. He was a man of quiet generosity, humor, and strength. Friends and strangers alike were drawn to his warm smile and quirky sense of humor. His acts of kindness were often quiet and unseen, such as consistently supporting a young man experiencing homelessness in Washington, D.C., with food, clothes, and spare change over the course of ten years.

Even as his illness progressed, Geno’s wit and intelligence shone through. He volunteered at a local food pantry, stocking shelves, assisting patrons, and dutifully discarding empty boxes—though he occasionally tossed out the full ones too!

Geno is survived and deeply missed by his loving wife of 41 years, Eleanor; his daughter Carie Allen; his sisters Janet Scherer (Frank) and Pamela Dalgliesh (Scott); his stepdaughter Tracy Suttles (Steven); granddaughters Hailey Shipley, Carly Mower, and Ella Allen; grandson Spencer Mower; and nephews Sam and Todd Dalgliesh. He was predeceased by his son, Greg Mower.

Geno will be remembered as a humble, loyal, and generous soul—a one-of-a-kind gentleman whose quiet strength and unselfish friendship will remain etched in the hearts of all who knew him.

A Celebration of Life Mass will be held on Wednesday, June 11, 2025, at 11:00 a.m. at Shepherd of the Hills Catholic Church, 6562 Amicus Rd., Ruckersville, VA 22968. Interment will follow at Chestnut Grove Cemetery, 555 Buck Mountain Road, Earlysville, VA 22936.
