Frankie Woodrow Gilbert

October 15, 1955 — March 27, 2026

Frankie Woodrow Gilbert left us suddenly on March 27, 2026, at his home in Nelson County. To many, he was known as Funk. His life was defined by his talent, work ethic, and humor. He lived life on his own terms, spontaneous and open to adventure.

He was born on October 15, 1955, to Woodrow and Erlene Gilbert, who preceded him in death many years ago. He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Teresa Marshall Gilbert; a daughter, Jesse (Brandon) Phillips; and a son, Aaron (Katie) Gilbert. He will be missed by his five grandchildren, Marshall and Emma Phillips, as well as AJ, Ginny, and Vivienne Gilbert. He also leaves behind two sisters, Joann (Bob) Burkholder and Norma Byers, as well as a brother, Jimmy (Terri) Gilbert. There will also be many nephews, nieces, cousins, and friends who will mourn his passing.

Frank grew up in Greene County and graduated from William Monroe High School in 1974 as salutatorian. He continued his education at Piedmont Virginia Community College and in Daytona Beach at AMI (American Motorcycle Institute).

He was dedicated to providing for his family through his work as a truck dispatcher at Edgecomb Steel for 10 years. He was later employed for over 30 years at Amerigas Propane as a delivery driver.

Frank’s main interest and joy in life came from motorcycles. He has ridden since receiving his license at 16 to the very end. Even though he attended AMI, he was mainly self-taught. He was constantly reading, researching, and brainstorming with others about bikes. He worked on bikes but found great joy in building motorcycles of his own creation. They were designed in his mind before the first bolt was turned. He also ran a bike shop, Old and New Custom Cycles, in Charlottesville for many years with his good friend Mike Wolford. Some of his best memories were those spent with his friends riding bikes. They even created a group known as PBF (Partners, Brothers, and Friends).

We will gather on Friday, April 3, to celebrate his life. The day will begin at Batten Funeral Home, where family and friends can come together from 11:00 am-1:00 pm to share our memories. It is encouraged that anyone who comes on a motorcycle help escort the procession to Spring Hill Baptist Church for a graveside service at 2:00 pm. There will be a time to gather afterwards in the fellowship hall for refreshments.

To all those who have reached out to the family, your consideration and love are greatly appreciated.

Arrangements have been entrusted to Batten Funeral Home in Ruckersville, Virginia.
