Harold Thomas Chapman, 92, of Stanardsville, Va., passed this life to a better one on December 29, 2022 surrounded by his family.
He was born September 1, 1930 in Greene County, Virginia to the late Elijah Catterton (Jack) Chapman and Goldie Shifflett Chapman. In addition to his parents, he is predeceased by a son-in-law Gregory Haney.
He is survived by his loving wife of 71 years, Peggy Weakley Chapman, daughters Gail Chapman Vitez (Daniel) and Shirley Chapman Haney, and son Troy Thomas Chapman (Bonnie). He was Papa to six grandchildren, Leanne O’Neill (Shaun), Nathan Haney (Amy), Kevin Vitez, Douglas Vitez, Mason Chapman, and Lexi Chapman. He is also survived by five great-grandchildren Haley, Gavin, Livvy, Boone, and Avery.
Harold served his country as a corporal in the U.S. 2nd Army during the Korean conflict, was a warehouse manager at Sears Roebuck, and ran the Gulf station in Ruckersville. Then he entered law enforcement as a deputy sergeant for the City of Charlottesville before moving back to Greene County in 1965 to join the Greene County Sheriff’s Department. He was deputy sheriff from 1965-1971 and Sheriff from 1972-1983. He then worked at Staunton Correctional Center until his retirement in 1991. When he wasn’t working hard, he enjoyed playing with his grandchildren, fishing, eating fresh food from his garden, and watching old western movies.
He was a long-time member of Swift Run Baptist Church in Ruckersville where a Celebration of Life will be held at 2:00 P.M. Saturday, January 14, 2023.
