Jack Lee Raines, retired Chief Petty Officer, passed away peacefully after a short illness in Sentara Hospital in Charlottesville, VA, on Sunday evening, December 14th. He was born to Robert Raines and Jean Faye Thornberry (nee Huffman) on February 23, 1937, in Chester, WV. He joined the Navy after graduating from Chester High School in 1955. He served in San Diego, CA; Alameda, CA; Naval Air Base, the Philippines; and the Presidio at San Francisco.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Joy Stefl, and is survived by his wife, Lois, his daughters, Penny Douglas (Wes) and Cami Journey (Mike), his sons, Dan Raines (Anita), Jay Painter, and Kevin Painter, eleven grandchildren, and nine great-grandchildren.
He was an independent carrier for banks in Virginia until he retired about four years ago. He loved going to movies and watching all the sports he could, especially his favorite team, the Cleveland Browns. He and his wife, Lois, loved to travel when health permitted. He was well-versed in the Bible and a born-again Christian, and attended the Nortonsville Church of God in Dyke.
The family will receive friends at Nortonsville Church of God on Thursday, December 18, 2025, from 6:00 to 8:00. A funeral service will be held on Friday, December 19, 2025, beginning at 2:00 at Nortonsville Church of God with Pastor Greg Payne officiating.
