Paul Stephen Short Jr. passed away peacefully at home on October 29, 2026.
Steve will be lovingly remembered by his devoted wife, Sherry Short, of 44 years, and his two daughters, Kendall Short and Kelsie Short, who were a cherished part of his life. He also leaves behind his future son-in-law, TJ Eppard, fiancé of Kelsie, who will continue to be part of the family Steve held dear.
He is survived by his brother, Rodney Lee Sipe and family; his sister, Brenda Short; Sister-in-Law, Rita Short; and his dear “special brother,” Gerald Deane, who held a meaningful place in his life. He also leaves behind his sister-in-law, Terri Knight, and her husband, Jim Knight; his nephew, Dustin Knight, and Dustin’s fiancée, Sarah Davenport; his nephew, Chris Lamb, and Chris’s wife, Ann-Michael Lamb, along with their children, Bryanna Wolfrey and Everette Lamb; and a special young lady, Kendall Breeden, who is a life-long friend of the family that was near and dear to his heart.
Steve was preceded in death by his father, Paul Steven Short; his mother, Evelyn Gibson Sipe; his stepfather, Everette Lee Sipe; his brother, Monte “Poncho” Short, and his special father figure, Enoch Webster.
He spent 26 years as a self-employed Class A contractor, where he established many friend relationships, one of whom is Troy Morris who became a son to him. Steve had a deep love for the simple things in life, especially those that allowed him to be outdoors and work with his hands. He found happiness in caring for his horses, spending time with his beloved dogs/grand-dogs, and taking on projects that kept him busy. Whether he was tinkering on his Broncos, working in his shop, or simply enjoying wildlife, Steve was happiest when he had something to do and the freedom to do it his own way. These passions were an important part of who he was, and the memories of him surrounded by the things he loved will be treasured by those who knew him best.
Though his passing leaves a profound void in the lives of his family and friends, the love he gave and the memories they shared will remain a lasting part of his legacy. He will be deeply missed, forever loved, and never forgotten by those fortunate enough to have been part of his life.
The family will receive visitation on Sunday, November 1, 2026, at Batten Funeral Home from 4:00-6:00 pm. A service will follow on Monday, November 2, 2026, at Evergreen Church of the Brethren at 10:00 am, with graveside service at Holly Memorial Gardens at noon. In lieu of flowers, the family requests for donations to be made to Greene County EMS at PO Box 358, Stanardsville, VA 22973.
