Sharon Rose Miller

September 11, 1951 — October 31, 2017

Sharon Rose Stephenson Miller, 66, of Ruckersville, Virginia, passed away October 31, 2017, at the University of Virginia Hospital.

A magna cum laude graduate of James Madison College, now James Madison University, Sharon’s career always involved teaching, at first in kindergarten classes in Spotsylvania (VA) County Schools and in two co-operative pre-schools. She not only taught at but also helped organize the Fredericksburg Preschool, Inc. She later continued to teach and be involved with young children in the children’s section of the Salem Church Branch of the Central Rappahannock Regional Library.

Always willing to give of her time and energy to others, Sharon met commitments and challenges head-on. She served as president of the Fredericksburg chapter of the American Diabetes Association and then as a board member at the state level. As an active member of Alpha Delta Kappa, an international honorary organization for women educators, she led the establishment of the Gamma Omicron chapter for the counties of Greene and Madison. Whether as a member or as an officer, Sharon was known for her zeal and attention to detail.

Preceded in death by her parents, Sharon is survived by her husband Boyd Larry Miller of Ruckersville, VA; son (Dr.) Bryan Lee Miller (Laura Agnich), of Statesboro, GA; son Stephen Paul Miller (Chrissy), of Raleigh, NC; granddaughters Seneca Biggs of Westminster, SC, and Ariel Wheeler of Raleigh, NC; and great-grandchildren, Reilly Humphrey of Garner, NC, and Adelaide Broome of Fair Play, SC. She is also survived by her sisters Myra Stephenson and Pamela Shriver (Jeff), of Manassas, along with her nephew William Shriver (Sheila) and grandnephews Benjamin, Gabriel, and Nathaniel of Berryville, VA; her brother-in-law, Jim Miller of Limestone, TN; and many other nieces and nephews.

A graveside service will be held on Monday, November 20, 2017 at 12 p.m. at Culpeper National Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that expressions of sympathy take the form of donations to the Greene County (VA) Rescue Squad, the American Diabetes Association, or the American Heart Association.
