Shirley Baugher Butler, 78, of Stanardsville, Virginia, passed away unexpectedly on September 10, 2025, at her home nestled in the heart of Greene County. A steadfast figure in the lives of those who knew her, she will be profoundly missed by many.

Born on February 16, 1947, in the close-knit community of Stanardsville, Shirley grew up surrounded by family and friends who instilled in her values of kindness and service from an early age. She attended local schools and was a proud graduate of William Monroe High School, where she formed lifelong friendships and developed a deep appreciation for the traditions of her hometown.

Throughout her life, Shirley was a Christ-follower and known for her unwavering faith and devotion to her church. As a lifelong member of Swift Run Baptist Church, she found joy and purpose in serving alongside her congregation, participating in numerous ministries and events that brought comfort and hope to others. Shirley’s commitment to her faith was evident in all she did.

Family was the cornerstone of Shirley’s life. She found great fulfillment in nurturing her loved ones, creating a home filled with laughter and selflessness. Her quick wit and generous heart were appreciated by all who knew her. Shirley’s culinary talents were renowned—she had experience in preparing meals for gatherings large and small, and her recipes are treasured by those fortunate enough to have shared a table with her.

Shirley began her professional career working at the UVA Library, followed by several years as a bank teller in Stanardsville, Virginia. She enjoyed working as bookkeeper for M&M Salvage before retirement.

Shirley was survived in death by her daughter, Audra Butler Taylor; son-in-law, Chris Taylor; sister, Faye Baugher Dean; grandchildren, Katherine Taylor Leatherman (Kevin), Kara Taylor Housel (Stephen), and Christopher Ryan Taylor; great-grandchildren Ella Grace Housel and Caycen James Housel; niece, Dana Baugher Garrard (Knight); and great-nephew Paden Garrard, amongst other beloved family and friends.

Shirley was preceded in death by her husband Clifton “Bootsie” Butler; her parents, Elmer and Lorene Baugher; maternal grandparents, Sam and Anna May; paternal grandparents, Ed and Della Baugher; brother, Ray Baugher; brother-in-law, Wayne Dean; and nephew, Shannon Dean, in addition to numerous loved ones.

A funeral service is scheduled for 11 a.m. on Saturday, September 13, 2025, at Batten Funeral Home in Ruckersville, Virginia. Interment will follow at Stanardsville Cemetery,  with a meal for visitors at Swift Run Baptist Church directly afterward.

In lieu of flowers, the family has asked that donations be made in Shirley’s memory to Swift Run Baptist Church

Arrangements are entrusted to Batten Funeral Home of Ruckersville, Virginia.
