Stephen Waterman McLean, of Ruckersville, Virginia, was born on July 1, 1952, in New Orleans, Louisiana, and passed away after a long illness on June 29, 2025. He is survived by his wife and best friend of 30 years, Nancy Seidenberg-McLean, who was by his side when he passed. He also leaves behind his younger brother, Michael McLean; sister-in-law, Firuzeh McLean; and nephews, Kian and Arman McLean.
Although born in the United States, Steve’s family moved to Germany when he was a toddler. He was educated in both American and German schools, making lifelong friendships and unforgettable memories. His father’s career took the family to Lebanon for two years before returning to Germany, allowing Steve to travel extensively and experience many cultures
A proud U.S. Army veteran, Steve was stationed in Germany while on active duty. He earned his bachelor’s degree from the University of Maryland, Munich Campus. After leaving the military and returning to the United States, he served several years in the Army Reserves. An enthusiast of German cars, particularly Porsches and fluent in German, Steve spent years working in the high-line German car industry.
In 2004, at the onset of the Iraq War, Steve left the car industry to apply his military experience overseas, working as a civilian contractor for eight years on Department of State and Department of Defense contracts in support of the U.S. military.
Steve was passionate about history, archaeology, and antiques, and loved traveling, exploring, and metal detecting. After returning from Iraq in 2012, he channeled his knowledge into a small business selling antiques and collectibles in local shops.
Known for his kindness, generosity, and fun-loving spirit, Steve’s energetic and magnetic personality will be deeply missed by all who knew him, especially his beloved rescue beagle, Beau.
A private inurnment will be held in the Columbarium at Arlington National Cemetery, attended by close family and friends.
A special thank you to the therapists who tirelessly worked with Steve to help him navigate the stages of his illness, the devoted healthcare aides who cared for Steve at home, and to the wonderfully compassionate staff at Medi Home Hospice in Charlottesville, Virginia.
