Steven Patrick Howe, 67, of Stanardsville, Virginia, passed away suddenly on Monday, November 24, 2025.

He was born on October 21, 1958, in Washington, D.C., the son of the late Robert John Howe and Catharine Virginia Hessler Howe.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Dennis J. Howe.

Steve is survived by his loving wife of 36 years, Miriam Wood Howe; one daughter, Kathleen Elizabeth Howe and her partner, Adam Schroeder of Charlottesville, Virginia; one son, Christian Patrick Howe and his wife, Elizabeth of Gordonsville, Virginia; two granddaughters, Lila Catharine Howe and Semara Rose Thomas; and his dog, “Beau.”

He is also survived by two brothers, R. Michael Howe of Silver Spring, Maryland and Richard W. Howe of Fairfax, Virginia; one sister, Kathleen P. Howe Handiboe and her husband, John of Middletown, Maryland; nieces, Theresa Gromadzki of Houston, Texas, Jennifer Howe Watson of Locust Grove, Virginia, Katy Torres of California, Wendy G. Cummings and Julia L. Breeden both of Ruckersville, Virginia; nephews, Lawrence Thompson, Samuel Wood both of Ruckersville, Virginia, Alexander, Kyle, and Ryan DeMastus all of Elkton, Virginia; father-in-law, William W. Wood of Ruckersville, Virginia; sisters-in-laws, Dinah F. Wood and her wife, Amy and Teresa Martin and her husband, Bobby all of Ruckersville, Virginia; brother-in-law, Mark E. DeMastus and his wife, Teresa of Elkton, Virginia; and many special friends and other family members.

Steve was born and raised in Washington, D.C. He graduated from St. Anthony’s Catholic High School and joined the U.S. Air Force in 1981, serving for three years in England and two tours during the Gulf War in 1991 and 1995. In 1988, through the friendship of a fellow Airman, Jerry Shinsky, Steve met Miriam, and the two were married in 1989.

Steve proudly retired as a Tech Sergeant after 22 ½ years of service to his country. Following his retirement from the Air Force, he and Miriam returned to her beloved Greene County, Virginia, where he was employed at Lowe’s of Ruckersville for many years.

Steve was a faithful son, brother, airman, husband, father, grandfather, and friend.

A memorial service will be held at 10:30 A.M. Saturday, December 20, 2025, at Batten Funeral Home, 12819 Spotswood Trail, Ruckersville, Virginia. A private interment is planned for a later date.

Memorial contributions may be made to brewbeagles.org (a Beagle rescue) and/or k9sforwarriors.org (an organization that provides service dogs to military veterans) and/or the charity of one’s choice.
