Walter Shifflett Sr. (Age 86) of Ruckersville departed this life peacefully on November 10, 2023, surrounded by his family. Beloved husband to the late Irene M. Shifflett. Walter was born in Greene County, VA, on December 8, 1936, to the late Adeline Shifflett and faithfully raised by his aunt Quilly and her husband Robert Morris.
Walter was a kindhearted, caring, and generous man who loved his wife's family and was loyal to his many friends. His life was defined by his gentleness and the trustworthy way he lived. He spent many years in Maryland raising his family until his retirement in 1996 when he returned to the place in which his heart so dearly missed and loved, "the mountains of Virginia."
Walter is survived by his five children, Wanda Shifflett of Greene and Pam Frazier (Chuck) of MD. Walter Shifflett Jr. (Lily) of MD, Tammy Frost (Tom) of DE, and Porter Shifflett (Shannon) of MD. He is survived by 13 grandchildren, Dwayne Britton (Renae) and Micheal Britton (Courtney), who he raised as his own children, Lisa Edmonson (Chris), Robert Kolpack (Hannah), Amanda Frazier, James Shifflett, Steven Shifflett. Nick Shifflett, Sarah Templeton (Justin), Chase Frost, Corinne Shifflett, Caroline Shifflett, Sophie Shifflett, as well as 11 great-grandchildren.
The family is grateful for the special people in his life who showed compassion and support during his final months of life. Thank you, Janie and Gary, Wilmer, Leroy (Frieda), Donnie (Barbra), Kenneth, JT, and Joyce; you all know what you mean to him.
Thank you to the Hospice of Piedmont and to his special caregivers in his final days, Sarah Templeton, June Jones, and Thalia Marie Maldonado Rojas.
Walter was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Irene Shifflett, and his special grandson, Patrick Andrew Shifflett. Walter will be dearly missed by his family, friends, and all those who loved him.
May his gentle soul rest in eternal peace. "We love you, Pop".
The family will receive friends on Monday, November 13, 2023, from 7 to 9 p.m. at Batten Funeral Home in Ruckersville. The funeral service will be held on Tuesday, November 14, 2023, at Batten Funeral Home at 11 a.m. Interment will follow on Wyatt Mountain.
