William Gregory Batten, known to most as Billy, age 67, passed away peacefully on November 12, 2025, at Lynchburg General Hospital, surrounded by his loving family. In his own way, Billy finalized one last trip around the sun, celebrating his 67th and final birthday just three days earlier, born November 9, 1958.
Born and raised in Charlottesville, Virginia, Billy was the son of the late Robert Edward “Eddie” Batten and Marie Davis Thomas Batten. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Sandra “Sandy” Marie Batten Good.
He leaves behind two sons, William Randolph “Randy” Sloan Batten, and Stedman Michael Robert Batten and his girlfriend Megan and her son Levi; brothers, Thomas “Tommy” Edward Batten and Norman Scott “Scotty” Batten; nephews, Daniel Scott Good and his wife Jessica, Thomas Bradley Batten, Nicholas “Nick” Carlton Kirby and his husband Robbie, and Matthew Scott “Scotty” Batten; niece, Elizabeth Ashley Good Tolson and her husband Benjamin; grandson, Shawn Randolph Ellis (Batten) Good; as well as numerous great-nieces, great-nephews, and countless friends who will cherish his memory.
Billy was a proud graduate of Albemarle High School, Class of 1977. Following in his father’s footsteps, he joined the family business, Batten’s Auto, where his love for automobiles became not only a career but a lifelong passion. Over the years, he continued his work in the automobile industry with both the family business and Colonial Auto.
Beyond his work, Billy had a deep love for farming and gardening. He took pride in planting a seasonal garden each year and raising chickens and hogs on his property. His hands were rarely still whether tending to crops, caring for his animals, or sharing the fruits of his labor with family and friends, Billy found joy and purpose in nurturing the land around him.
On behalf of the Batten family, we would like to express our deepest appreciation for the care given by the ICU and Critical Care staff at Lynchburg General Hospital.
The family invites friends to join them for a graveside service at Riverview Cemetery on Saturday, November 15, 2025, at 11:00 a.m. Billy’s nephew, Scotty Batten, will be officiating the service as the family gathers to celebrate his life.
Arrangements are entrusted to Batten Funeral Home of Ruckersville, Virginia.
